One of the best analysis on why Facebook bought Instagram.
Facebook was scared shitless and knew that for first time in its life it arguably had a competitor that could not only eat its lunch, but also destroy its future prospects. Why? Because Facebook is essentially about photos, and Instagram had found and attacked Facebook’s achilles heel — mobile photo sharing.
It will be interesting to see how Instragram shapes up. Instagram is a community and it has an unique vibe. More than filters it was the community that fueled Instagram’s growth. With Facebook, will there be a change to the vibe and deter its growth? Growth rate shouldn’t matter for Facebook since it would want to keep the focus on Facebook itself.
I am not expecting mass exodus overnight but it will be interesting to watch.
