I believe the engagement is higher with mobile applications because they provide better user experience by leveraging the platform. Though mobile web applications can provide similar functionality, it lacks the engagement.
An interesting observation: Android platform utility apps like Gmail, Google Search and Android Market made into top 10 in audience traffic. On iOS, it is 3rd party applications like Pandora, YouTube, Weather that dominated the list.
